What you'll need

  • analog pH sensor meter kit for Arduino
  • 12V DC air pump aquarium for Arduino
  • Arduino Uno R3 ATmega328P microcontroller board
  • clear acrylic tube column for experiments
  • plastic inline flow control valve set

Steps

  1. Build a packed column from the acrylic tube filled with packing material.
  2. Set up the air pump to push CO2-rich air (such as from a vinegar and baking soda reaction) up through the column.
  3. Place the pH sensor at the water outlet and log pH over time.
  4. Run tests at different gas flow rates using the valves.
  5. Calculate absorption rate and compare mass transfer at each flow rate.
  6. Document the column and results for your portfolio.

What to photograph for your portfolio

  • Absorption column build
  • pH vs time
  • absorption vs flow rate
  • mass transfer analysis
